10 Extreme Moments Where Video Game Fans Took Things Too Far
5. Threats issued after Black Ops 2 weapon changes
The gargantuan success of the Call of Duty franchise has mostly manifested itself through the millions of players logging in every day to its online multiplayer. Much like other popular franchises however, its fanbase can be hard to please and one of the more vicious incidents from them came with 2012's Black Ops 2.
As we got deeper and deeper into the seventh generation, the use of patches and other light changes became more prevalent. This was especially true in the online setting, where developers were constantly taking on feedback and altering the finer details to ensure good weapon balance.
Around a year after the game's release, when the DSR-50 Sniper Rifle and AN-94 Assault Rifle were altered, fans viciously attacked Black Ops 2's creative director David Vonderhaar. The former had its rate-of-fire reduced, while the assault rifle had its damaged nerfed. This was apparently reason enough for the angrier fans to start directly attacking those who made the game.
This angry mob mentality has dogged the Call of Duty faithful and the gaming community at large for many years now, seemingly a symptom of a severely entitled attitude some folks have.
In response, the developer stressed the need to hold respect for them and stop threatening them for doing their jobs.
