10 Extreme Moments Where Video Game Fans Took Things Too Far
7. Hideo Kojima Gets Death Threats Over Metal Gear Solid 4
Next, we have a case of gaming industry fame backfiring severely. Japanese developer Hideo Kojima has long been a titan of the industry thanks to his work on the Metal Gear Solid franchise. The immense attention to detail and little touches he put in each game put him in lofty company.
After a time however, Kojima was starting to tire of the franchise alongside Konami's continued insistence that he continue to pump out more games. When it came to 2008's Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, things got ugly. Hideo had suggested previously for both MGS2 and MGS3 that he would no longer work on the series. This may have gotten a portion of the fanbase a bit too worked up.
Initially the plan was to have Kojima take on a co-director credit with fellow producer Shuyo Murata, but fans went crazy and sent death threats to both him and the studio. Fearing the outcome of such attacks, Hideo stepped back into the directing chair once again. A nasty incident after years of success.
Ironically enough, many of Kojima's feelings surrounding Metal Gear Solid 4 would be injected into the final product itself. The creative visionary, much like Old Snake, was tired of working on the franchise and once again insisted (though not for the last time) that Guns of the Patriots would be his final entry.
