10 Extreme Moments Where Video Game Fans Took Things Too Far

3. Boycotting Left 4 Dead 2 for releasing too soon

In another Valve game to make the list, 2009's Left 4 Dead 2 was the subject of some controversy. The PC community are a highly vocal bunch and occasionally that manifests itself in drastic measures.

The original Left 4 Dead had released one year earlier and fans, concerned that Valve was not honouring its promise to provide content, was jumping the gun and releasing a sequel too early. It's possible this sentiment was also brought on by the annualised releases of Call of Duty and sports franchises. Releasing a new game every year often comes with a lack of innovation and fans felt it was unacceptable.

Fans gathered on the Steam community page pledging to not buy Left 4 Dead 2 on release. While not as extreme as other entries on the list, it was still rather overzealous considering how well the game turned out. Left 4 Dead 2 was an excellent sequel that boasted near-endless replayability alongside a healthy helping of new features.

The fact that Left 4 Dead is still being played and updated over a decade after its release speaks volumes of its overall quality. Those who boycotted the game all those years ago probably felt more than a little foolish after the title's success.
