10 Features You Didn't Know Were Cut From Classic Video Games
5. A Boss Twice Cut From Mega Man Still Gained A Cult Following
The six Robot Masters from the first Mega Man game have become emblematic of the series (except Bomb Man, nobody cares about Bomb Man), but there was one fully-designed character who failed to make the roster.
A 1995 manga by Hitoshi Ariga revealed that a glue-themed boss named Bond Man was cut from the first game. Because no official artwork had survived, Ariga included a picture of Bond Man he drew from producer Keiji Inafune's descriptions.
"We scrapped a glue robot" isn't even exciting enough for breakroom chat at an Elmer's factory, but Bond Man somehow gained a cult following amongst the Mega Man fanbase. The mystery surrounding the would-be character has inspired countless works of fan art and even earned him a very brief cameo in the official Mega Man comics.
Because of his unexpected popularity, Inafune considered including Bond Man in Mega Man Powered Up, ultimately deciding against it because he didn't want to ruin the character's mystique.
Wondering how Bond Man would've fit into the game is intriguing, but that would've meant cutting one of the other characters instead, and it'd be hard to imagine Mega Man without those first six Robot Masters.
Except Bomb Man. Bomb Man sucks.
