6. Confrontation With Eveline - Resident Evil VII: Biohazard

There was a period where Resident Evil lost sight of itself, emphasising campy action over the survival horror that made the franchise iconic. For this reason, Resident Evil VII: Biohazard was a return to form, once again focusing on atmosphere and slow-burn tension.

Despite staying true to classic games, this instalment pushes for a more personal story, with a new hero, Ethan Winters, fighting an infected family rather than traditional zombies. Players get to know each family member and see them as victims, making it more tragic when you're forced to kill them.

As such, the confrontation with the overarching villain, Eveline, is insultingly mundane. Rather than having an emotional or thought-provoking showdown, the multi-phase boss battle is as straightforward as they come. Each phase feels like a cut-scene, due to the limited control players have. Though Eveline looks intimidating when she goes full Godzilla-mode, she drops dead after being blasted a few times.

Although Resident Evil has had lame showdowns in the past, REVII's ending was extra disappointing since it felt like it was building to something more poignant than shooting a gigantic ghoul in the face.
