Generally speaking, the survival-horror genre is a solo affair. You're expected to be alone, vulnerable and most importantly scared, so adding in a group dynamic would usually go against the core components of the genre - however that didn't stop ObsCure from incorporating co-op play into its formula and the results really do speak for themselves.

Very much a cult favourite these days, the ObsCure games - of time of writing there is still only two available - managed to marry classic survival-horror gameplay with couch co-op, shot through the lens of early-2000s teen horror. The first game was set in a high-school, wherein a series of disappearances prompts a group of students to investigate what's going on after hours, culminating in showdowns with horrific monsters and all manner of obtuse puzzles.

Outside of the couch co-op, ObsScure also bucked genre trends by allowing players to swap out between different characters, all of whom had different strengths, weaknesses and abilities, but had to proceed with caution as there's a risk of perma-death within the game, which gave it a slight strategic edge that often isn't seen within the genre.

The series was very forward-thinking for the time and it's unique gameplay additions would certainly be very welcomed by modern audiences should the series ever rise from its grave.
