10 Genius Hidden Mechanics In Video Games

7. Dodge Offset Lets You Keep Combos Going - Bayonetta

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Cloud Tifa Aerith
Platinum Games

Bayonetta is one of the most expressive and enjoyable character action games out there, but one of its most important mechanics is easily missed by players, and that's Dodge Offset.

Though it is referenced in both the game's instructional manual and an in-game menu, there's no outright tutorial or unmissable explanation for it, which is shocking considering how radically it changes the game's combat.

Dodge Offset is a means through which players can continue chaining an attack combo together while also dodging clear of enemy attacks.

Basically, if you're mid-way through a combo and need to dodge, simply keep the last button hit in your combo held down while pressing the dodge button.

Then release the hit button once you've dodged clear, and then hit the next button in your combo and it'll continue as though the dodge never interrupted it.

Dodge Offset is extremely tricky to master but also makes Bayonetta considerably more enjoyable to play once you start to get the hang of it. If you're planning to conquer the game on higher difficulties, it's a basically necessary skill.

It's also included in many other PlatinumGames titles, where again it's generally not explained upfront for some baffling reason.
