10 Genius Ways Video Games Got Past The Censors
1. GTA: San Andreas
When developing Grand Theft Auto, Rockstar have gone on record with their intention to always try to push the envelope for the industry, attempting to innovate in the medium; go where others haven’t and expand in an area where they feel video games could grow.
One of these areas for San Andreas was sex, and understandably, in regard to the
infamous Adult Only rating in America, the idea was
quickly scrapped.
At least, that's what the public thought.
On PS2, the game had been altered, with the now-infamous "Hot Coffee" sex scenes removed. On PC though? Well, thanks to a series of leaked emails from Rockstar founder Sam Houser, it confirmed the sex scenes were intact, and that a patch would be released post-launch, to "unlock the darkness".
Of course, none of this flew when the content was discovered anyway, and it cost Rockstar millions. A huge controversy ensued, and it led to San Andreas being slapped with an Adult Only rating anyway, stopping it from being sold in general retailers across America.
The game was quickly patched, removing all traces of the mini-game and it's safe to say Rockstar learned their lesson about sex in video games... for now.
