10 Great Square Games (That Aren't Final Fantasy)

10. Front Mission

Frontmission Throughout its nineteen years of existence, the Front Mission series, initially co-developed by Square and G-Craft, has experimented with elements of a number of different genres (from third person shooter to side scroller) and media mediums (from radio drama to manga). Its core games, however, are highly tactical RPGs, and damn goods one at that. Ostensibly taking place in the near future, the strategic combat in said games focuses on mechas known as Wanzers, which are used in conflicts and confrontations between groups of consolidated superpowers. Though this combat is the main focus of the games, each also features a well-scripted storyline, which ties (in a complicated fashion) to the stories featured in other media to create a vast fictional world. Sadly, only a few entries in the franchise have been released to Western audiences, with only two core games and two spin-offs receiving official English translations. Given that the series is now said to be finished, it seems unlikely that gamers in America and Europe will ever be officially able to experience the series' origins, even though releases of such on the likes of the Playstation Network would go down a treat.
