10 Greatest JRPGs Of All Time
4. Xenoblade Chronicles
Xenoblade Chronicles has one of the most unique takes on a JRPG world I have ever seen.
The entire game takes place on two continent-sized giants named the Bionis and the Mechonis. You play as Shulk, a very nerdy and VERY British engineer who becomes the new chosen owner of the legendary blade, Monado. This blade is the only real defence the humans of Bionis have against the monstrous mechons, who have been waging a war on the people of the Bionis for untold millennia.
When his girlfriend is brutally killed by a surprise mechon attack, Shulk and his best buddy Reyn set out on a quest for vengeance. Little do they know the secrets this bloody path will lead them to: Secrets older than time itself.
It is a wonder the game could fit on the Wii without the whole console spontaneously combusting, as Xenoblade Chronicles is HUGE. Not just in length, of which it is nightmarish, but also in scope.
The game is built like an MMORPG, where you are the only player on the server. Landscapes are vast, and filled with optional content to find.
Combat is also some of the most fun you'll ever have with an RPG, very similar in play style to FFXIV. Party coordination and attack positioning are essential to not only victory, but to even just making sure your ability works at all. The game isn't perfect (we all make fun of how absurdly horny the designs are in 2, but one look at Sharla proves that this has always been a thing), but the problems the game has are minor in the face of such a sweeping masterpiece.
