5. Final Fantasy 6

The other games have their shining moments, some of which soar even higher than 6, but classic fans of the series know that when it comes to the overall experience, no other entry does it better than 6.

Final Fantasy 6's story is excellent, but a bit hard to summarize due to the sheer number of moving parts it has.

It begins with the mage Terra being set free from an indeterminate amount of time as an enslaved magical weapon of the Gestahlian Empire, then setting out with a group of rebels to defeat her former masters. And trust me when I say that is an oversimplification of the highest order, as FFVI has one of the most multilayered stories in the franchise. Dozens of characters in the main party alone, story revelations seemingly every half hour, and one of the most jaw-dropping midpoint twists in gaming history.

All of this wrapped up with the most satisfying of Final Fantasy's classic active time battle system. Tight, responsive, random encounters never take too long, while boss fights are exciting and the best kind of teeth grinding. If you can, get your hands on this game.
