2D run-and-gun side-scroller, Cuphead, released on PC and Xbox One in 2017 to critical acclaim. Its deceptively charming aesthetic and extremely difficult boss encounters were the topics of many discussions across the gaming world. We were suckered in by the cute characters and 1930s animation style, only to have our arses handed to us time and time again.

Any number of Cuphead bosses could have made this list, but none deserve their place more so than Dr Khal and his goddamn robot. This son of a biscuit duo have a three-phase battle for players to test their patience against, should they want to progress through the game.

The first phase sees you go up against a laser beam that will destroy all but one attack, a minion robot which fires unavoidable lasers that need to be parried, and boomerang-like robots which fly across the screen and bounce around after Cuphead. Finish this stage and you’re challenged with fighting the robot himslef, who can use a cannon, his arms, and homing bombs, all of which will deliver a devastating blow to your hit-points.

Get through those two stages and you then have to survive a bullet-hell phase, because of course you do.

Anyone who chooses to attempt this run on Expert mode needs to be put on a register.
