10 Hated Video Games That Broke Fans

6. Star Wars: Battlefront II

Although Star Wars: Battlefront was criticised for its repetitive gameplay, there was a lot of buzz circulating over the sequel. Based on the trailer, Battlefront II seemed to include every iconic vehicle, weapon, ship, planet, and playable character. As a result, fans geeked out at the prospect of battling Stormtroopers as Luke Skywalker on the Death Star or embracing the Dark Side as Kylo Ren.

But when consumers booted up the game, they realised the most desirable characters were locked. There were two ways to access them - performing a gruelling, totally-not-fun level of grinding or by purchasing a loot box with real money. But because the loot boxes prizes are based on chance, you can never guarantee you'll get what you want, no matter how much you spend. Because of this, countless players wasted their hard-earned cash just to unlock an iconic character like Darth Vader or Darth Maul.

This scandal got so out of hand, governments across the globe investigated the game to see if microtransactions like this should be illegal. Battlefront II may not be the worst Star Wars game but it's directly responsible for the decline of loot boxes in gaming.
