'Horrifying' and 'Super Mario' aren't two words that typically go together. Luigi's Mansion had a couple of legit creepy moments, but that was the whole point of the game at the end of the day. But, there's one moment in 2007's Super Paper Mario that manages to eclipse anything that game could throw up.

The River Twgyz is a part of The Underwhere in Paper Mario lore and is said to be made up of the souls of lost sinners in what is an obvious reference to the River Styx in Greek mythology.

During their time on and in the river, players will encounter Underhands, invincible skeletal hands that lunge out in an effort to drag them to a watery grave. It's one of the most memorable portions of the game, but what elevates this otherwise creepy cartoony sequence to a more traumatising level is the soundtrack that accompanies it.

Heavy feedback and audio effects are used to distort the sounds made by the inhabitants of the river, with some gamers even claiming there are messages and cries for help nestled in. Creepy stuff.

Horror fan, gamer, all round subpar content creator. Strongly believes that Toad is the real hero of the Mario universe, and that we've probably had enough Batman origin stories.
