Hinterland

What Is It?

Quintessential survival gaming - attempt to last as long as possible out in the cold, harsh wilderness. Everything from the direction of the wind to which items you can find, what you can craft and what shelter you can dart underneath factors into taking your next breath.

Originally released in 2014 under Early Access, developers Hinterland are adding a full story mode in 2016. Details are light, but being The Long Dark already has such a positive critical reception and vibrant fanbase, it's sure to rein in even more players.

Why Should I Care?

Either you've been bitten by the survival game bug, or you haven't... yet. The Long Dark is an especially effective litmus test for the genre overall, rather like Klei Entertainment's Don't Starve. A ton of quasi-realistic factors enter into getting through the day, resulting in literal warmth as you strike up some flint to create a fire amongst a frosty mountainside, or discover a barely-functioning rifle and use it to defend against a wolf attack.

It's these moments that create dynamic experiences for the player, and have helped give The Long Dark a sense of immersion like nothing else. Here's hoping the story mode will deliver a ton more.
