The environmental storytelling video game genre is the kind of thing you either love or hate. On paper, a game where you walk around a small location with no characters, advanced gameplay, or set pieces, examining items and slowly uncovering a story, sounds dull and repetitive. However, paper isn't what matters, as there's so much to love when actually playing one of these games, and Marie's Room is a fine example.

This roughly 30-40 minute game places you (unsurprisingly) in the titular room. You look around this room as Kelsey, a friend of the title character, and through context clues and memories, slowly uncover the mystery of what happened to Marie and why your friendship changed.

While the gameplay itself isn't going to thrill you, the story at the core of this game is incredibly nuanced and enjoyable. Additionally, the journal feature, which tracks the progression of the story with nice visual cues and prose, adds a lovely throughline to the whole thing. The story goes in some incredibly unexpected directions, and by the end, you'll feel satisfied by this bite-sized title.
