10 Incredibly Useful Mechanics Video Games Never Bothered To Explain
7. Cut Can Be Used To Cut Wild Grass And Avoid Random Fights - Pokemon

Most of your time in Pokemon is spent fighting other trainers, but traversing the map is also pretty important. To help you with getting to different places, the older games like Fire Red and Green Leaf offer you special moves called HMs, which can be used outside of battle.
One of the first HMs you find is Cut, which is used to remove small bushes and trees that block your path to new areas.
However, the in-game description doesn’t tell you that the move can also be applied in more useful and game-changing ways, too.
If you ever hated treading through tall grass, having to battle random wild Pokemon every step of the way, it turns out that Cut can be used to remove any patch of grass, completely removing the chance of being attacked.
To do this, you have to step into the grass you want to get rid of and activate the move from the Pokemon tab. Doing so will make it incredibly convenient to move through most areas filled with random encounters without having to buy any repels whatsoever.
Not bad for a basic HM!
