10 Inspirations Star Wars Rogue One Will Take From The Dark Forces Franchise
1. Larger Legacy: Star Wars Stories
Star Wars: Rogue One is ambitious. It literally takes a paragraph from the opening scroll and first five minutes of the original film as a pitch. This will be the prequel film fans have wanted all along; blending classic warfare themes with a science fiction setting. If the film is a success, the sky is the limit for future stories moving forward. If the film incorporates elements from the Legends material, even better.
For many years, fans believed the end had come and gone with the release of Revenge of the Sith in 2005. The Star Wars saga would instead live on in other mediums such as television and print media. With the announcement of the Disney acquisition, a sequel trilogy, and stand alone films, new vigor was born instantaneously.
While The Force Awakens was the tent pole event for this return to form, Rogue One represents the true course moving forward. With two other spin-off / anthology films already in the works, it's easy to decipher the future of the franchise with Rogue One success.
In much the same way, the Dark Forces franchise was the standard barer within the gaming community. Up until the release of Knights of the Old Republic, Kyle Katarn and his missions dominated this telling of the saga.
While the industry has come a long way since the original Dark Forces, the franchise is still strongest in explaining larger elements within original trilogy era and beyond. Katarn would go on to become a pivotal character within the Legends continuity. If all goes according to plan, Jyn Erso could be the next character to hold such high praise outside of the Skywalker story.
