8. Kingdom Hearts Series: Cloud Versions

In the case of some titles, there’s something of a loophole to use to avoid the issue of the Switch’s limited specs: the controversial concept of Cloud Versions. Through this technology, titles such as A Plague Tale: Innocence are available on the system, as are some core Kingdom Hearts experiences such as Kingdom Hearts - HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMix and Kingdom Hearts III.

There’s no denying that these are beloved classics, nor that Kingdom Hearts III might be something of a strain on the system’s creaking chipset. It’s great to see it playable on Switch nonetheless, and the compromise is lessened when a Cloud Version is running optimally.

Even so, the earlier titles in the series certainly could have been ported to the system proper. By doing so, the heavy downsides of Cloud Versions, such as not ‘owning’ the title physically OR digitally and the reliance on a high-quality Internet connection throughout, would have been non-factors.

The practice of Cloud Versions, which remain comparatively pricey, is a true hot button issue for Nintendo Switch owners. The Kingdom Hearts series is perhaps the highest-profile example, and so among those that sting the most. Sora’s befuddling adventure through various Disney worlds is a unique treat to journey through, but the experience comes at a heavy cost on Nintendo Switch.
