10 INSULTING Nintendo Switch Games

4. Balan Wonderworld

Mortal kombat 1
Square Enix

A lot of intrigue surrounded Balan Wonderworld. Yuji Naka and Square Enix’s attachment meant that the project had an impressive cachet indeed, despite the rather cliched-looking fantasy action platformer concept.

The end result, sadly, was largely disappointing. The costumes, which offer different Kirby-esque abilities, have limited impact, and there are just too many of them for them all to have unique uses.

In constructing the theme of each of its worlds around the struggles of a different character, Wonderworld at least takes an interesting approach. It demonstrates that it has the ghost of several good ideas, but struggles to piece them all together into anything cohesive. The story, too, is something of a mystery, and not in a positive way.

The saddest part is that Balan Wonderworld on Nintendo Switch is a questionable experience from a technical standpoint too. With its uneven frame rate and juddering animations, it's the worst way to experience an already-maligned title. The game at least made some bold decisions, and it was a shame to see them go so wrong.
