Definitive Editions, too, can reasonably be expected to provide something special. When attaching the term to games with the cachet of this Grand Theft Auto trilogy, the stakes were high to deliver. Alas, the result was far from perfect.

As previously noted, Nintendo Switch is capable of running some demanding titles very well indeed. Technically, it could be hoped that these titles would run flawlessly. The arrival of this port in November 2021, however, was much anticipated and a major disappointment.

Though it sported technical issues such as pop-in and a poor frame rate on other systems, the Switch port may have been the most heavily affected. It was, on a more positive note, the subject of numerous patches after launch, and its performance is rather more stable, but the iconic Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas deserved better from the start.

The thrill of driving through vast cities and engaging in all manner of carnage is what Grand Theft Auto is all about, and the sheer amount of content these titles represent makes it all the more unfortunate the port didn’t do them justice.
