10 Irritating Video Game Tropes That Refuse To Die
7. The Z(ombie) Factor
The poor, shambling undead; they're literally shells of their former selves and nobody will let them rest, not filmmakers or comic creators and certainly not games publishers, who never got the memo that zombies are out.
At this stage in the subgenre's waning days of popularity, a foul-smelling musk of desperation hangs in the air around the men in suits; they're the epitome of a grandparent so desperately trying to find common ground with a younger generation that they name drop fads long-since dead.
State of Decay 2 and Days Gone, this year's z-listers, have a mountain to climb in proving that culling the braindead is still a fresh and exciting activity, but neither looks to be attempting any much-needed formula changes.
It doesn't have to be this way, either. Give the herd of skinless ghouls time off to rest and recuperate. Then, if the hunger returns, satiate it with a fresh perspective. Screw the post-apocalyptic angle; show us what had to happen for the world to reach such a state.
