10 Major Missteps By Video Game Companies

1. A Remake So Bad It Actually Ruins The Original - Warcraft III: Reforged

Blizzard tops the list with a remake of a classic game that was so bad, and so universally hated by fans, that it is officially the worse rated game on Metacritic, with an appalling 0.5/10.

The list of things that are wrong is actually spectacular: Cutscenes were not remade as promised, graphics are reduced from what was advertised, many of fans' favourite online features have been stripped away, and gameplay and balance have changed notably.

Even worse, the changes have been applied across Blizzard's live client in such a way that players of the original who didn't purchase Reforged have to play the disastrous new version anyway.

Blizzard's reaction sent the situation from bad to a full blown crisis.

Refusing to refund players even if they were unable to play the game due to bugs, banning players from the forums for helping others receive refunds, and blatantly denying they were breaching country's consumer laws. The list goes on.

They have since been forced by lawsuits, claims of false advertising and overwhelmingly negative responses to reverse this position, and the refunds are flying.

In a decade we have gone from the company that produced Warcraft 3, Diablo 2 and Starcraft, to one fans are actively boycotting. It is sad to see our heroes fall, but consumers have to let developers and publishers know they will be respected.
