Geralt of Rivia is a hero. He saved the world and has helped countless people in need, and on top of that he's one of the best monster-slayers around.

Why on earth anyone would hate the man who has done so much good in this universe seems like a massive plot hole, only in place to serve the arc of the game for new players.

The answer is actually found in the lore of the Witcher series itself.

Gamers can find two books titled 'Monstrum, or Description of the Witcher' which paints a heavily negative description of Witchers for people in the land. Witcher's are greatly detailed as being pests - just pests that happen to be amazing at killing monsters.

It's also clearly shown over and over again that they are promiscuous with married people, kill multiple citizens almost wherever they go, and its heavily implied they steal children to make into other Witchers and improve their ranks.

In this ancient world, news travels orally, and Geralt killing a bunch of soldiers performing ill deeds can easily be manipulated into him slaughtering a town without remorse. He didn't get the 'Butcher of Blaviken' title because he delivered a bouquet of roses to the Queen.
