10 MASSIVE Missed Opportunities In Video Game Stories
3. Not Enough Backstory - Mortal Kombat X
Netherrealm Studios has definitely nailed down the art of putting a story mode in a fighting game. That being said, when Mortal Kombat X introduced eight brand new fighters to the franchise, the decision of having the focus of the story be on the "kombat kids" and not the Outworld civil war was without a doubt a major missed opportunity.
In a game series known for its fantastical characters and inter-realm conflict, the choice of making it's main focus for the story be on the up and coming new characters rather than a civil war in a familiar and unstable realm definitely seemed like the wrong call. Mortal Kombat X introduced a bunch of other new characters, like the gunslinger Erron Black and D’vorrah the Hive Queen.
These characters were not given any real introduction or back story, which unfortunately forced them to be mere background villains.
In a series that has given us so much more, imagine where the story could have gone had the game given us a more in depth look at the Outworld conflict and the characters it involved, rather than trying to sell the fans of this franchise on its brand new heroes.
