The heyday of point and click adventure games may be somewhat behind us now, but the love gamers still have for classic titles like The Secret of Monkey Island certainly suggests a resurgence could be in the works.

I mean, it is in the works. Ron Gilbert has announced Return to Monkey Island which is coming this year but let’s talk about the 1990 classic.

The easter eggs, the characters, it’s camp, it’s charming, it’s challenging, The Secret of Monkey Island has everything going for it. Everyone has a different favourite classic adventure game and games like Day Of The Tentacle and Grim Fandango could easily make this list, too, but The Secret Of Monkey Island is all kinds of special. The music is iconic, it’s infinitely quotable, the story is engrossing, and its puzzles have gone down in history.

I don’t have a bad thing to say about this game, it’s the first game I ever remember playing which is not a bad place at all to start.
