10 Mind-Bending Video Games That Will RUIN You

2. Inside (2016)

Blue Prince
Playdead

From the developers behind Limbo, Inside throws players into the shoes of an unnamed boy in red as he's pursued by masked guards through a forest. As players continue to make their way through this side-scrolling puzzle platformer's beautifully bleak world, they soon find themselves in a facility where strange experiments are being conducted.

While the collection of puzzles within this title is straightforward compared to the other entries on this list, it's everything else about this intriguing game that will leave it lingering in players' minds long after the credits roll.

Without any narrative or dialogue to explain what's going on, everything about this world is gleaned through environmental storytelling. Whether it's subtle background details or the mind control devices that become a major gameplay mechanic, each new discovery only raises more questions. This is especially true once players arrive at the surreal finale.

The ambiguous nature of this game means that everything is left to interpretation. Not only will players obsess over every detail to piece together the narrative, but the title's thematically rich subtext will also leave them pondering concepts of player agency.

Like Limbo, Inside is a masterpiece in game design and visual storytelling.
