Desmond Miles had been the protagonist Assassin's Creed fans had been seeing the storyline through for four games by the time Assassin's Creed III was released in 2012. Not only had they gotten used to seeing his face, hearing his voice, and following his path from humble bartender to master Assassin There was the added detail of all the historical protagonists players control being direct ancestors of Desmond.

Seeing him die at the end of Assassin's Creed III was, therefore, a watershed moment for the series.

The climax to Assassin's Creed III sees Desmond, Lucy, Shaun and William Miles delving deep into the Grand Temple beneath the Davenport Homestead, after learning of an object that would prevent a solar flare from devastating the Earth. Once there however, the crew learn that using the object will release the Juno, a deity with an intense hatred for humanity.

Faced with an impossible decision, Desmond chooses to sacrifice himself to prevent the solar flare, believing humanity will have the ability to fight Juno down the line. A stream of light shoots up through his body, he collapses to the ground and the screen goes black.

Any hopes of seeing the series' first protagonist alive and well are firmly put to bed in the game's sequel, Black Flag, where a security video found at Abstergo shows Desmond's post-mortem being performed.
