10 Most Awesome Video Game Openings

5. Uncharted 2

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7BAelqlxwI&t=0m1s Another fantastic instance of developers blurring the line between cut-scenes and actual gameplay, Naughty Dog's Uncharted 2 did that in distinct style at the very beginning, for within seconds of Nathan Drake nearly falling out the back of a train carriage that's hanging off a cliff, we're thrown right in there to give him a hand. If not for the chapter title popping up, we probably would have assumed that we were still watching a cut-scene, and alas, that's a testament to the fantastically cinematic quality of the game entirely. It's easily one of the most thrilling and well thought-out intros to any game ever; we have to try and get Nathan up to the top of the train carriage and escape a messy demise, while various debris falls towards us, and the train itself gets ever more uneasy on the cliff edge. The camera angles change to give players the most cinematic experience possible, yet unlike many games, this doesn't disorientate the player; the controls are never inverted or altered by camera angle changes (a massive pet peeve of mine), and so its film-like approach is never at the expense of player comfort. This seamless mixture of cut-scene and gameplay made it clear how cinematic video games could be, and indeed, Uncharted itself, such that talk of a movie based on the series began around this time.
