10 Most Controversial Video Game Levels Ever
4. Manji Dungeon - The Legend Of Zelda
The criticism which the original Legend of Zelda is unique. Players had an issue with one dungeon, not because of its content, but because of its structure. You see, each dungeon you enter has a specific shape. One dungeon is shaped like a bird, another is shaped like a crescent, another is shaped like a snake, etc. The third dungeon is shaped like a manji, which is a Japanese symbol that represents structure and patterns.
Unfortunately, the manji is known by a different name in the Western world - the swastika. Because the swastika was used by the Nazi regime to represent their twisted cause, the symbol has been synonymous with evil ever since.
However, the manji was used in Japan a thousand years before World War II. It's also been used by many cultures and religions throughout history to represent peace, hope, honour, and love.
But this wasn't common knowledge back in the 1980s, so many Westerners assumed Nintendo snuck the swastika into the game to indoctrinate players with Nazi ideology. Even though it was all a big misunderstanding, it's pretty weird that one of Nintendo's biggest IPs contains this infamous symbol.
