10 Most Depressing Things About The Last Of Us Part 2
4. Abby's Ending
Abby’s character has been almost as divisive with the fans as the game itself.
Whether you love her or hate her, she’s an interesting character with a moving arc. Part II cleverly splits the gameplay between Ellie and Abby. By the time you start playing as Abby, there is zero empathy for her. But by learning more about her past and walking in her shoes, that empathy builds until most of the players are rooting for her to get a happy ending.
After losing her father and focusing her energy on avenging his death, Abby is left with a gaping hole in her life. She sabotaged her relationship with Owen and, near the last third of the game, all her friends are dead. In a selfless and reckless act, she saves two Seraphite children and ends up finding family in Lev.
After the player has watched Abby suffer so much in this depressing universe, there is a longing for her to gain some peace.
Skip forward a few months, and it seems she’s about to find happiness. Her and Lev uncover a settlement of her old group, the Fireflies. She has the opportunity to build a life for her and her new family.
Then, on the way there, they’re captured by cannibals. Tortured and strung up for dead, their hope is squashed.
Although the last time the player sees Abby, her and Lev have escaped the cannibals and are sailing away to find the Fireflies, it’s an ambiguous ending tainted with suffering.
