10 Most Depressing Things About The Last Of Us Part 2
2. Joel's Death
Surprised?
Joel’s death could’ve made it to number one had it not been pipped at the post by something even more depressing. But more on that later.
Joel was the co-protagonist, along with Ellie, in the first game. So, it was no surprise he was an instant fan favourite. His murky moral compass and complex character made him interesting and ultimately likeable to play.
The marketing for The Last of Us Part II led fans down the path that Ellie’s girlfriend, Dina, would be killed. This would then mean Ellie and Joel teaming back up to go on a revenge mission.
But, at the start of the game, Joel is killed. Not only killed, but brutally bludgeoned to death with a golf club.
This came as a huge blow to the fans, and was the ignition for most of the outrage surrounding the game. The player’s shock was akin to Ellie’s at seeing Joel die – it was almost unbelievable.
But the real tragedy lies in what was mentioned before at Number 9: Ellie and Joel had only started to reconcile their relationship the day before Joel is killed. The realisation that the duo could never make up for lost time and live happily together as a family cast a heavy depression across the whole game that was hard to look past.
It was almost the saddest aspect of the game.
Almost.
