Cost: Real Money

Starting with Lego Harry Potter: Years 5-7, many Lego games have characters who can only be unlocked with real-life money. The thing is, other than a couple of exceptions, any character you'd actually want are included in the game free of charge (they cost studs but not your actual real cash).

Some highlights include Gilderoy Lockhart in a straitjacket in the Character Pack for Lego Harry Potter: Years 5 - 7; Barliman Butterbur, Farmer Maggot, and a Corsair Pirate for Lego The Lord of the Rings' Middle-Earth Character Pack 2; Wild Will and Odd Ollie in The Lego Movie Videogame's Wild West Character Pack.

Oh, and who could forget the Dwarf Soldier from the Sidequest Character Pack in Lego The Hobbit?

None of these character packs are expensive, but buying characters like this for real money is pointless.

Worse than the pointless characters are the couple of exceptions where an iconic character is locked behind one of these purchases. Want to play as the Hogwarts founders in Lego Harry Potter: Years 5 - 7? Pay up. Want to play as Nightwing or Shazam in Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes? That's going to cost you.
