10 Most Disappointing Games Of The Decade (So Far)
7. The Callisto Protocol
The Callisto Protocol certainly arrived with a heft of pedigree behind it, given that it was directed by Dead Space creator Glen Schofield and was marketed as a spiritual successor to the hit sci-fi horror franchise.
Trailers also did a fantastic job of showing off the game's mesmerisingly cutting-edge visuals, suggesting Schofield and his team had found a way to fill the void left by Dead Space's dormant status.
But for all of its spectacular visuals, The Callisto Protocol ultimately proved to be a disappointingly shallow affair unworthy of its inspiration.
Once you attune to its undeniably gorgeous art direction and overall atmosphere, there's little left to savour.
The story is gossamer-thin, the gameplay frustratingly centers around stiff melee combat encounters, and even though it can be beaten in just eight-or-so hours, it's nevertheless a slog making it to the end.
Furthermore, any hope that a sequel would hew closer to the brilliance of the earlier Dead Space games was dashed when the game flopped at retail, failing to recoup its admittedly stonking $162 million budget and killing the "franchise" before it even got started.
