10 Most Disappointing Video Games Of 2018
7. Far Cry 5
Another game of two halves, there's so much in Far Cry 5 to love. The gameplay loop of exploration, scoping out enemies and taking them out by any means necessary is better than it's ever been, and the lush Montana sandbox itself is full to the brim with fascinating environmental stories to stumble across.
Sadly, while you can make your own fun, the actual bulk of the story, all about twisted, religious cult leaders threatening the end of the world, at no point lived up to its potential. There were flashes here and there, cool threads about brainwashing and hypocrisy, but they were pushed mostly to the side in favour of misplaced humour and a rote, repetitive structure of performing the same basic missions in order to take down each area's leader.
Perhaps in response to the political backlash that was garnered before launch, the end result tried its best to offend nobody on either side and be as impartial with its potential commentary as possible. By doing that though, it ended up saying nothing at all and its characters devolved into caricatures wrapped up in nonsensical plot twists that, in hindsight, seemed to have been crammed in simply so a post-apocalyptic spin-off could be made.
