10 Most Epic Moments In Super Mario History
3. Joining Up With Sonic - Mario And Sonic At The Olympic Games
For years, Super Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog were the two undeniable greats of the gaming world. SEGA's lightning fast little hedgehog and his launch title shook Nintendo to the core when it was released, and the two franchises were thrown into a war of upping each other with their subsequent games pretty much throughout the entire decade of the '90s.
However, the discontinuation of the Dreamcast in the early 2000s, and the desire to not see literal years worth of work on Sonic Adventure 2 go down the poor sales drain meant that, for the first time ever, a Sonic game was made available to play on a Nintendo system.
In celebration of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Nintendo and SEGA went one step further and announced a crossover that gamers once thought impossible. Not only would they be able to go through the entire Olympics with the Wii's hot new motion controls, but they would be able to do it with all their favourite Super Mario and Sonic characters.
And the game proved to be a real hit, spawning one of the most successful spin offs for both franchises and eventually opening up further to include biggest rosters of characters, more events and plenty of new modes and events.
