10 Most Iconic Hats In Gaming History
4. Master Chief’s Helmet (Halo Series)
Master Chief isn't the most original character design of all time. The space marine/reflective visor combo has been around in video games for years before Halo.
It helped keep Samus Aran’s identity a secret until the final reveal where gamers presumably muttered “a woman?” and raised their eyebrows like Roger Moore in Moonraker, and it kept the Doom Slayer’s handsome visage safe from demonic blood and guts flying in his mouth. So why pick Master Chief over those two?
Well, because we have never seen Master Chief’s face. Not fully anyway. For all intents and purposes, his Mijinor armour helmet IS his face.
The lack of expression is an integral part of the Character. Much like Noh Japanese theatre, we can sometimes see more emotional emotes on a blank canvas where we have to paint the expression using our imaginations, like Vader's conflict of seeing Palpatine tear his son apart with lightning fingers during the climax of Return Of The Jedi (before they added that bloody "NOOOOOOO "anyway) or Din Djarin watching Grogu act all cute and stupid in The Mandolorian.
Hopefully, Microsoft will never feel the need to spoil the mystery. All we need is that Orange mirror and Steve Downes' epic voice.
