8. Finish Him! - Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat was another game that caused waves of controversy upon its release due to it's presentation of completely uninhibited violence. Easily the most violent and most controversial element of that first game (and admittedly each game since to a lesser extent) was the range of diabolical finishers one could perform when met with the 'Finish Him/ Her' screen. Nothing is more satisfying in a beat-'em-up than total domination of one's opponent and Mortal Kombat was one of the first on the market to include a mechanic that allowed for - encouraged even - exactly that, with stomach-turning results. Finish Him is a truly iconic image in its own right; it's the prelude to each and every dismemberment, blood-letting and vile execution in the entire Mortal Kombat franchise.
