7. Hardspace: Shipbreaker

In Hardspace: Shipbreaker, you play as a rookie astronaut, hired to dismantle abandon spaceships for materials to enhance your company's own vessel.

Even though the sci-fi setting sounds thrilling, it doesn't change the fact that the gameplay centres around performing ard labour. As a result, the gameplay could be tedious, even boring, if it was mishandled.

But Hardspace puts such a heavy focus on atmosphere on danger, you become utterly invested in the smallest job, knowing the consequences of the tiniest fumbling. If you forget to decompress a room, you're dead. Because you're in micro-gravity, the smallest bump can knock you off course.

A tiny piece of space debris may not seem threatening, but has the same impact as a bullet when it whisks towards you at 200mph. If you make one false move while securing parts to your craft, you'll blow it to kingdom come.

The core gameplay is so satisfying, Hardspace could easily work without a narrative. But the overarching story, tight script, phenomenal voice-work, and the ever-present themes on capitalism and exploitation elevates Hardspace from a fun simulation title to one of 2022's strongest entries.
