7. The End - Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kgGaDp3QGw One of the best boss fights in video game history is also one of the most ridiculous. Naked Snake aka Big Boss finds himself up against an elderly sniper called The End, and Hideo Kojima manages to stage one of the most brilliantly ambitious showdowns gaming has ever seen. The fight spans three areas of forest, and is all the more frustrating because The End flat out refuses to kill Snake; he will only tranquilise you, and if you're sufficiently zonked out, the fight will end with him taking you back to jail, where you have to start again. It's a notoriously tricky fight that requires the player to use thermal goggles to track his movements; I recall it taking me over half an hour to finish the first time, but the feeling of satisfaction afterwards was immense. What adds to the insanity is that it is actually possible to kill The End two other ways, by shooting him in the head with a sniper rifle when you see him briefly from a distance earlier in the game, or by winding your PS2 clock forward a week, which will result in him having died of old age.
