Remedy have always had a flair for the noir-esque level of style. The first two Max Paynes were, for all the theatrical gunplay going on, gritty detective noir stories. Alan Wake, despite the darkness theme going on, was still quite pretty to look at.
So when Control finally arrived last year, it looked somewhat... bleaker, in light of the aforementioned. But bleaker doesn't mean bad, with the starkness of the Oldest House striking a bold contrast against the action inside it.
When the walls start shifting, objects start to fly and Hiss bend light and space around them, Control really opens up as one of the most visually appealing titles of recent years.
The whole building carries a calm, Twin Peaks/X-Files vibe about it, the quietness of the House interrupted by both Jesse and The Hiss making a scene throughout. But it's not just looks, as Control assaults the ears with slick beats, too.
The Ashtray Maze is undoubtedly one of the best setpieces in years, with The Old Gods of Asgard blasting throughout. Even The Foundation DLC gets involved, with its pumping synthwave level, Swift Platform, worth the price of admission.
