10 Most Stylish Video Games Of The Last 10 Years
5. Hotline Miami
Back to pixels now, but no less violent than Bloodborne. Probably more, thinking about it. You don't stamp people to death in that...
Hotline Miami may, on first glance, look quite minimal. The menu shows basic, wireframe lettering and the whole game has this grindhouse/retro vibe to it. If you judge at first sight, this game isn't for you.
Look past that though and soon you'll be getting stuck into this game's simple yet frustrating beauty. Alright, it may not be prettiest pig at auction, but it has so much style going for it that it doesn't matter.
Pixelated hyper-violence has never looked so good, backed by a pounding soundtrack of electro and synthwave artists spurring you on. Is it frustrating? Yeah, but then so is Devil May Cry until you get the hang of it.
That I'm comparing it to Capcom's franchise is only praise. Don't dismiss Hotline Miami for its simple looks. Instead, get stuck in to its deliberate "retro" aesthetic, that screams old school sensibilities. Lose yourself in the colourful violence and meta-narrative, whilst a killer soundtrack spurs you on.
