10 Most Terrifying Horror Video Games You've Never Played
4. Detention
The second title on this list from Red Candle Games, Detention is another Taiwan-set period piece, this time taking place during the '60s. It's another game on this list that traps you within a high school as well, though this time the classrooms and hallways are haunted by the ghosts of former students, as well as the traumatic memories of the town's military oppressors.
Unlike Devotion, Detention opts for a side-scrolling 2D mechanical framework, more about exploration and piecing together the stories of a series of characters. The more stylised, visual novel aesthetic doesn't make it any less scary though, quite the contrary, as the limited visible space is used to obscure sinister beings and hostile environments.
This is the kind of game that pulls the rug out from under you 20 minutes in, and then never lets you feel comfortable afterwards. Even better, there's a pretty solid TV adaptation as well, and with a story this good and haunting, it's a pleasure to experience it in all its forms.
