10 Most Terrifying Horror Video Games You've Never Played
5. Darkwood
Surprisingly, there haven't been many survival games on this list so far, but Darkwood is here as the weirdest, most oppressive of the bunch.
This top-down title has you scavenging in blight-infested woods by day in order to complete missions and gather resources, while holing up at a safe house at night, praying you've got enough resources to put up defences against the creatures that are about to descend on you.
Both sides of this coin are excellent. While night is tough, daytime is no cakewalk and still features plenty of scenarios that can kill you dead, but the uniquely unnerving cast of untrustworthy characters you come across make venturing out worthwhile.
The weird little sub-stories housed within this title are all memorable, whether that's cult-like communities you stumble across, or an abomination of an animal hiding in a slaughter house. This is a long game too, one that feels like a real slog, but that's the point. Each day you get through is supposed to be hard and leave you thinking: For what? To be able to continue to go out and subject yourself to horrors in the hopes of maybe, one day, escaping this demonic forest?
Maybe you're better off turning off the lights and welcoming the beasties come nightfall.
