10 Most Terrifying Moments in Gaming History

7. Doom 3 €“ A Room with a View€of the Dead

I€™ve heard of a mod for Doom 3 that lets you use the torch and have your weapon equipped at the same time. Surely that€™s like modding Metal Gear Solid so that guards don€™t hunt you when you€™re spotted €“ it defeats the entire purpose of the game. The necessity to alternate between your torch if you wanted to see and your gun if you wanted to kill was what made this whole game so relentlessly terrifying. In one such early section of the game €“ Service Room 2A of the Communications Transfer stage to be specific - you enter a small pitch dark room filled with corpses that look€you know, that way video game corpses look when it€™s obvious they€™re going to get up and attack you at some point. Yeah, they look exactly like that. Upon searching the area and collecting a PDA entry, you quickly learn that your suspicions were correct and suddenly you€™re besieged by said Zombies in an extremely confined space, without the ability to see and shoot at the same time. Not terrifying enough? Well, some of the Zombies now have chainsaws. This is easily one of my most terrifying Doom 3 memories. It€™s not that it€™s particularly difficult moment looking back, it€™s the fact that you can hear that chainsaw coming at you from the darkness; you don€™t know when it€™ll arrive and you don€™t know where from. You just know it€™s coming.
