10 Original Instalments In Iconic Video Game Franchises You Must Play

10. Resident Evil

Resident Evil 1
Capcom

From its campy-as-Hell intro to the consistently terrible/phenomenal voice acting throughout, there's a weird mix of a "F*ck it, let's just have fun!" tonality in Resident Evil that somehow totally works with its other stringent, survival horror aspects.

How? Who knows, but you almost need the levity provided by these over-the-top characters when you'll spend 20 minutes edging slowly around a corridor, knife-outstretched because you ran out of bullets trying to survive a vicious dog-mauling.

Even the much-chastised 'tank controls' (all you can do is walk forward, back and rotate) play into a feeling of helplessness you should have when exploring a terrifyingly imposing mansion in the dark. Fumbling to get a shot off or sprinting away from danger takes on a whole other frantic edge when you need to have your wits about you to do so, providing the last piece of the vintage 'Resident Evil experience' that's just been rebuilt from the ground up once again in RE7.
