10 Original Instalments In Iconic Video Game Franchises You Must Play
9. The Legend Of Zelda
Yes it looks like a child's rubber stamp kit run amok, yes, Link's face contorts hilariously when you pick something up and yes, those weird funnel-nosed urchin things have no real form, but it doesn't matter, dammit.
It's precisely in the face of all these outdated things that all of Zelda's truly legendary mechanics come through. The open-world, the difficulty curve that'll see you die and die over and over, only to incrementally explore and progress, memorising new routes as you go. The respawn system that retains your items and currency, meaning you can kill groups of enemies over and over to afford better gear and items before moving forward.
The dungeon design, the perfect pacing of item unlocks, the size of the map itself and the music - Zelda's original music is plinky-plonk to the extreme, but it birthed some of the most memorable melodies of all. Themes that to this day are still being paid homage, and will receive yet another update in Breath of the Wild.
For everything that Zelda 'is' though? You need the original.
