10 Overblown Video Game Controversies
7. Overwatch – Tracer's Booty Pose
During the Overwatch open beta, many fans were delighted at Blizzard Entertainment's latest multiplayer-shooter. One fan in particular decided to share on the forums a long post about the time-travelling speed-demon Tracer.
While the post was full of praise at first, it then expressed disgust at one of Tracer's cocky victory poses. According to the fan, this exposed her bottom, and thus reduced the “fast elite killer” to “another bland sex symbol”.
The post ended by saying that the person's daughter loves watching the game's trailers, and wants her to grow up with a team of oddball murderers as inspirational role models.
This was persuasive enough for the developers to formally apologize and replace Tracer's pose, much to the dismay of many fans. The news started to spread like wildfire. Both sides were just as hot-headed about it, as well.
Tracer's pose, standing with her back to the camera while looking over her shoulder, was likely to imply she was trying to say "Sorry to leave you in last place, luv!" to the losing team, though her exposed posterior unintentionally painted a different picture.
Blizzard's response to it all was a bit tongue-in-cheek. Tracer's pose was replaced with a cheesecake pin-up girl pose instead. Some were still offended by the supposedly over-sexualized pose. Others were too busy laughing at the company's cheekiness (no pun intended).
