10 Overhyped Upcoming Video Games That Could Disappoint You
3. Shadow Of The Tomb Raider
It might be hard to be disappointed by something hardly anyone is bothered about, but as far as finally letting Lara Croft "become the Tomb Raider" (whatever that even means), Shadow is already a mixed bag.
For as much as new developers Eidos have given Croft a weirdly "gritty", Tomb Raider Underworld aesthetic, director Dan Bisson confirmed she'll not even have access to her iconic twin pistols. Such a thing would be fine - she used them for a spell in the 2013 reboot, after all - but leading with this as you come onto the series, after the already middling Rise of the Tomb Raider? It's not the best foot to put forward.
Overall, this rebooted "trilogy" is leaning way too heavily on Tomb Raider being a "status" that needs to be achieved - rather than just the arbitrary definition of Lara's work across all those older games. Gameplay-wise it's failed to offer anything other than an Uncharted-lite set of abilities, now with a character who after two instalments of coasting by, looks to be having something of an identity crisis.
In the shadow of Tomb Raider, indeed.
