As horror games go, it's hard to think of one as unique or as daring as Dark Fear, which combines an RPG with a point-and-click adventure, and throws in a few turn-based battles for good measure.

In an appropriate starting point for such a mysterious and gloomy game, Dark Fear has you on the back foot from the very beginning, with your character waking up and wondering where they are... or even who they are. From here, cue all kinds of spooky shenanigans and a persistent atmosphere of dread, as you try to figure out what the hell is going on across a host of haunted environments.

Along the way, you'll hunt animals, upgrade your weapons, and carefully manage your inventory, and though there are a few frustrating moments where you'll frantically click on everything in sight because you can't figure out what to do (which, let's be real, is a problem that most adventure games have), sticking points like this are rare, and overall, the game's many systems blend together seamlessly.

These days, we don't get enough of those classic adventure games like Monkey Island or Space Quest, and Dark Fear really does feel like a loving throwback to that bygone era - albeit with a lot more pants-wetting moments.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
